Nobody sells your product better than you do, and nobody's email gets opened like a founder's. Founder-led outbound is the highest-converting motion available to an early-stage SaaS company, and the most commonly botched, because founders copy the SDR playbook (volume, sequences, spray) instead of playing their actual advantage: credibility, judgement, and the right to talk to anyone. Here is the lean version that fits in two hours a week.
Why founders out-convert SDRs
- The title opens doors. A founder emailing a founder or an exec is a peer conversation, not an interruption from a rep.
- You can say things reps cannot. You built the product for a reason; the origin story is the pitch.
- Every reply is product feedback. Even the noes tell you how the market describes its own problem, which no hired SDR will relay faithfully.
- You need ten conversations, not a thousand. Early-stage pipeline math rewards precision, and precision is a founder strength.
The rule: signals over lists
With two hours a week, you cannot afford to send a hundred mediocre emails. You can afford ten excellent ones, and the way to pick the ten is a trigger: the account that just raised, just hired a Head of the-thing-you-fix, just launched into the problem you solve. The signal does the targeting and writes your first line. A founder email that opens with the specific thing that happened this week at their company gets answered.
Ten emails to accounts with a live reason to buy will outperform two hundred to accounts that merely fit the ICP. Every week. It is not close.
The two-hour weekly loop
- 130 minutes: pick. Review the week's signal matches and choose the ten best fits. Kill anything you would not personally bet on.
- 245 minutes: personalise and send. Edit the drafts so every message sounds like you on a good day. Short beats clever; specific beats short.
- 330 minutes: replies and follow-ups. One considered follow-up per thread, anchored to the same signal, three to four days later.
- 415 minutes: score the loop. Which signal types got replies? Tell your radar, so next week's ten are better than this week's.
When to hand it off
Keep the motion founder-led until a play converts repeatably: same signal, same message shape, same close rate. That play, and only that, is what you hand to your first sales hire or put on autopilot. Handing off before the playbook exists just scales the guessing.
